World University Chess Championship

5 - 11 SEP 2010
ZURICH, SWITZERLAND
90 minutes (40 moves) + 30 secs

the Scholastic NAG 2010 - Part 1

Come to next weekend 13 & 14 March, Malaysian junior chess players will be in the battle among their respective age group peers in "Pulau Pinang" or Penang. The name of the tournament is the National Age Group or simply NAG 2010. Unlike the previous two editions, for this year edition one of the national-level scholastics chess tournament will be held outside the Klang Valley. NAG 2008 was held at the OCM Indoor Sports Arena while NAG 2009 was held at a shopping complex named OUG Pearl Point. GiLoCatur started to know and be involved in the NAG of the two editions.

Since the six age groups tournament is about in a week to kick off, GiLoCatur will try to write about it as much as possible. Even SUKMA 2010, a national-level sports event, to be held in Melaka does not get much publicity and attention from the media in this country what to expect for the event where CHESS IS NOT A "TERAS" AND POPULAR SPORT in this country. Many even do not agree that chess is actually a sport discipline like football, hockey and badminton. Thus, GiLoCatur as a chess parent and enthusiast will try as best possible to promote this event.

For this entry, GiLoCatur would like to share with all about the participant list as registered online via Tan Eu Hong website as of today.

GiLoCatur understands the amount of money needs to spend to participate in the NAG tournament is not small especially for the participants come from outside Penang. GiLocatur has allocated and estimated about RM 1,000 for the expenditure for the trip. Therefore, only those parents who understand the ROI (Return of Investment) for letting, allowing and supporting their children to be involved in chess especially the scholastic that do not have cash prizes. It is simply, only gilocatur parents will do that.

GiLoCatur Is HAPPY Today

Why GiLoCatur is HAPPY today? Below are the reasons.

First
A weekly chess sparring kicked off today in Putrajaya. Eventhough, just few people came GiLoCatur strongly believes more and more chess players will join in the future. The important thing is just keep the weekly activity get going. To find out more details about the sparring, go to Hairulov's chess blog here.

Second
MCF has opened up by having "Meet the Parents Forum" that is scheduled to take place during the NAG in Penang this coming weekend. The forum is in conjunction with the national-level tourney for the Malaysian chess junior players. The forum is very important and crucial to the Malaysian chess community in order to progress and move forward. Among the topics and issues to be discussed are
  • National ratings
  • MCF Selection guideline
  • Chess training and development for the youth
  • Tournament rules
  • Funding and sponsorship
  • National selection
GiLoCatur is hoping many chess parents will take part actively in the forum and the findings and the feedbacks discussed and highlighted must be implemented and further action being taken. Go to the MCF's official chess blog here for more details.

Third
Reading the chess blog of Rizal Ahmad Kamal, lots could be learnt especially for the novice and beginner chess players. Quality blog postings like that are critical and needed to help our local chess development. Not many can write annotated chess games like that. Only few of them are capable of doing it. For GiLoCatur, the other best thing about Rizal's postings is some history and flashbacks of the Malaysian yesteryears chess. GiLoCatur even never heard some of the names of the chess players who left the chess scene as per mentioned by Rizal. GiLoCatur hopes Rizal will keep writing and posting quality entries like that along with other bloggers like IM Jimmy. And lastly, GiLoCatur would like to congratulate him for winning the Putrajaya Closed tourney.

Keputusan Poll Lokasi Pilhan NAG - as of today 9 Mac

Tetapi bagi GiLoCatur yang ada sedikit pengalaman dan knowledge tentang "survey", sekurang2nya ini merupakan satu permulaan to gauge on some critical and vital info on the Malaysian chess issues / pendapat among the "SMALL" Malaysian chess community.

Jika kau fikir ragu-ragu
usahamu tidak menentu

Engkau la apa engkau fikirkan
Terkandung dalam pemikiran
Jika kau fikir kau boleh
Kau boleh!!!"

Reviews On 11th Weekend MALAYSIAN Chess Tournaments

Malaysian chess community is blessed with five chess tourneys during the last 11th weekend. Unfortunately, one of them was cancelled due to lack of participants. But still the other four tourneys that include three grand prix managed to attract 482 chess players to participate. The one-day Perak grand prix or GP held on Sunday had the highest number of participants with 187 that required more than 90 chess boards. Bangladeshi GM Ziaur Rahman showed his prowess by winning all his seven games to clinch the champion for the Open category. Go to this link if you want to know more details about the tournament.

The second top most number of participants is the Putrajaya Closed with 161 players in total for three categories. A strong chess player, Rizal Ahmad Kamal of Malaysian Royal Customs Department, won the Open section bagging the RM 500 cash reward. For more reports and details of result, please go to Hairulov's blog here and Sifu's blog here.

The Segamat GP that was held in a secondary school in Segamat, Johor had provided the chance and opportunity to many Johorean school children to participate in a chess tournament. 90 players entered the tournament in three categories. The highest number is Under 18 section with 47 participants. GiLoCatur believes with more aggressive promotion like approach the PPDs and schools in Segamat and Muar areas, more and more school children will participate. As posted in this blog here, Abdullah Che Hassan is the champion of the Open category edging other favourite and top players like Abg Bro or Kamaluddin Yusof.

Lastly, KL Grand Prix had 44 participants. Event though, it had the smallest number of participants, it also had quality players. Mohd Nabil Azman won the Open section after scoring 5.5/6 points in the absence of the first leg winner and a Malaysian chess prodigy, Yeoh Li Tian . Go to fireyrook's chess blog here to view further details and pictures of the tourney.

In short, having several chess tournaments at the same time do not necessarily affect the number of participants. The important thing is the tourney is at the right time and the right venue with proper, well-planned and aggressive promotion as well as impressive prizes. GiLoCatur believes with some little adjustments and attractive package, foreign and overseas chess players especially from the neighbouring ASEAN countries will participate in our chess tournaments.

KEEP IT GOING!

Click here to check on GiLoCatur's posting on all the chess tourneys that took place during the last 11th weekend.

Segamat GP Final Results

GiLoCatur received below email on the results of Segamat GP being held for two days during the recent weekend. The total number of participants for the event of three categories - U12 (27), U18 (47) and Open (16) is 90. Not bad for a tournament held in outside Klang Valley. Hopefully, more players will participate in the second leg. It is NOT impossible. Need to outreach and approach more schools and PPDs. Contact radio and news paper to promote the event. Maybe needs some investment in bunting or flyers at public places.

Assalamualaikum Dan Salam Sejahtera En. Saleh Latif

Kerjasama yg tuan berikan amatlah saya hargai.
Sekian Terima Kasih.
