What is APPSO?

APPSO is a sport event for ASEAN countries which is to be a platform to promote ASEAN awareness, strengthen regional solidarity and build friendships among children in the region. APPSO stands for ASEAN Primary School Sport Olympiad. The event is also aimed for ASEAN elementary school students to improve and develop sporting talent at an early age. Chess will be one of the five sport disciplines contested.


When it started and when it was held?

The first edition began in 2007 and hosted by Indonesia.

This year edition is also hosted by Indonesia.


How many ASEAN countries participated?

For this year edition, 8 ASEAN countries participated including Malaysia while last year (2208) only 7.

Laos and Cambodia did not participate.

In chess, Malaysia is represented by WCM Nur Nabila, Yeoh Li Tian, Muhd Irfan Haqqim and Tan Wei Hao. The chess official is led by Cikgu Suffiah. The Chess event is held at Hotel Sahid, Jakarta and will offer 5 gold medals at stake.

Meanwhile, Singapore is represented by Derek Lim De Li (Nanyang Primary), Linson Lim De Dao (ACS Junior) and Calvin Ong Jun Xue (Tao Nan)


Who are the past overall winners?

Indonesia had won the previous two editions of the APSSO.

2007 - 6 golds, 5 silvers, 4 bronzes (3 sports contested)

2008 - 12 golds, 9 silvers, 11 bronzes (5 sports contested)


How ASEAN countries fared in the APSSO?

Malaysia
2008 - second place, won gold in football after beating Indonesia in the final

Vietnam
2007 - second place with 5 golds, 2 silvers, 2 bronzes
2008 - third place with 3 golds, 3 silvers, 5 bronzes
