The Malaysian Chess Festival Heats On

The Malaysian classic chess events start today. Three events - DAT Malaysian Open, Ambank Chess Challenge and Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Seniors Open, are being held concurrently. The seventh edition of DATMO has attracted 133 participants that include 54 title players. Malaysia, as the host country, has the largest number of participants as shown by below Federation statistics. It is also obvious that China and India have big number of players as well as Indonesia.

Sixteen Grandmasters or GMs are among 54 title players participating in the event. It is quite a strong chess tournament. Below are the list of the twenty six Malaysian players that participate in the DATMO. IM Mok whose FIDE ratings is 2416 is the best Malaysian seed at 32nd. Among the elite Malaysian players missing in the starting list are IM Mas, IM Yee Weng and FM Nicholas. GiLoCatur believes that they do not participate due to work commitments. GiLoCatur wish BEST OF LUCK to all the Malaysian players in the events.

In the first round yesterday (Wednesday), most Malaysian players lose to their respective opponents. Our current chess prodigy, Li Tian, managed to draw against GM Saidali. In the second round, he will play against IM Mok who also drew his first round.

Below is the list of the sixteen GMs led by the top seed, GM Abhijeet Gupta from India that embrace the 2010 Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open.

The above are the results of Round 4 of the DATCC 3rd KL Team Chess League. Sixteen (16) chess teams are participating.

Three teams won convincingly in Round 4 - Kam Mah, Team AU and Excel Chess Team. Kam Mah won against Think Big who was anchored by the current chess prodigy, Li Tian. He managed to draw with IM Jimmy Liew on first board. The other point for Think Big came from Li Tian's father, Mr Yeoh Chin Seng who drew with Abdullah Che Hassan on the third board.

Muhd Izz Saifuddin of Nusa Mahkota Chess Club managed to score the only point (1/2) after a draw with Jax Tham of Team AU. While Excel Chess team led by Zhou Ren won all the four boards against their younger counterpart, First Saturday Chess team led by Roshan.

Camilia who played the fourth board for CS Solutions Ladies team managed to upset Sahir from 17 Chess Club team. It is based on their FIDE ratings where the latter has more than 200+ ratings higher than the former.

The above is the pairings of Round 5 for the DATCC 3rd KL Team Chess League. The top board match up shall be very interesting GiLoCatur believes. The battle is between Team AU (white) and Kam Mah (black).

It is a great news to Malaysian chess when one of its chess prodigies, Yeoh Li Tian, is making a history when beating a much much higher-rated and titled player while currently having a 6-week training stint in Beijing, China.

Below is his winning game against a Chinese Woman Fide Master. Thank you to Encik Hamid for sending GiLoCatur the info and game.

Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open - Commentary 1

As GiLoCatur glanced down the first round result from http://datmo.net/2009/08/round-1-results/, few results that really excite me especially of our junior chess players who are participating in the DAT Malaysia Open 2009.

The first one is the win by Wong Jianwen againts higher-rated Singaporean IM. The second one is that Yeoh Li Tian managed to draw with a Vietnamese FM. Syabas to both of them.

Come back for further report.

picture from MSSMKL blog

14-year-old Wong Jianwen played black on board 43 and won against IM Tan Lian-Ann from Singapore. The 52-year-old chess master is four times Singaporean Olympiad team member and six times Singapore champion. Hopefully such victory will provide Jianwen's confidence to perform well in the DAT Malaysia open and meeting Malaysian senior players.

Malaysian chess prodigy, Yeoh Li Tian, starts his DAT Malaysia Open journey with a good result when he managed to draw with FM Nguyen Duc Hoa from Vietnam who FIDE rating is 2300+ in the first round.

In second round tomorrow morning, Jianwen will play white against IM Ashot Nadanian on board 15, while Li Tian will play black againts Yu Yangyi on board 20.

BEST OF LUCK to both of them and all other Malaysian players!
