Feedbacks On "Catur Dan Solat" Article

Firstly, thank you very much for all the feedbacks and comments on "Catur Dan Solat" article. GiLoCatur would like to give the credit to the writer of the article, IYASILIAS, the writer who emailed to chess-malaysia group. Yes, it is not written by GiLoCatur, hopefully all the readers are aware about it. GiLoCatur just "copy-paste" it to this blog since it is very important and essential to some Muslim chess players and parents.

From the feedbacks and comments, GiLoCatur believes the following shall be taken into consideration:

1) Chess organizers especially Muslims should provide prayer facilities. They also should ensure that players have ample time for praying between rounds.

2) Chess arbiters should consider the prayer's time when preparing the pairings. They should advise the organizers about giving ample time for prayers to the muslim players and providing prayers facility like prayer room, prayer mat, qiblat direction and water facility for wudhuk.

3) Muslim chess players should provide good example by performing solat and better in group (jamaah). They should also highlight about it to chess organizers and arbiters.

4) In order to attract muslim chess players and parents, this aspect, solat's attention and facilities, must be taken care of and looked into serious by chess organizers.

Below are the feedbacks and comments.

Good article.

Setiap hari, Muslim diwajibkan 5 kali solat. Jangan risau sahabat-sahabat non-Muslim sekalian.

Subuh - sekitar 05.45 pagi hingga 7.15 pagi
Zuhur - sekitar 01.00 petang hingga 04.20 petang
Asar - sekitar 04.20 petang hingga 07.30 malam
Maghrib - sekitar 07.30 malam hingga 08.20 malam
Isya' - sekitar 08.20 malam hingga Subuh.

Atas semangat 1Malaysia, saya syorkan jadual diubah sedikit mengikut kebijaksanaan tuan penganjur. Contohi penganjur IIUM 2009 yang sanggup menerima kritikan, membetul kesilapan atas semangat masyarakat Malaysia yang majmuk.

Salam 1Malaysia, Majulah Catur untuk Negara.

25th Nottingham Games on 31st October 2009

GiLoCatur just learnt about Nottingham Games organized by Nottingham Malaysian Society. This year event is a jubilee meaning it has been held for 25 years. Basically, the Games is for Malaysian students from universities all over UK. Reading from its official website, there are 13 games contested and chess is one of them. The format for the chess event is five-rounds swiss system. Then the top five will play double round-robin to determine the top five winners.

According to its second runner-up winner, Soti who represented Norwich's University of East Anglia, below are the winners.

1st - University of Bradford
2nd - University of Nottingham (Bala)
3rd - University of East Anglia (Norwich) (Soti)
4th - University of Cambridge
5th - ?

From Soti's blog, he won all his five rounds in the swiss-system format. He even won with 1.5 - 0.5 score againts the eventual winner in the round-robin format.

Based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nottingham_Malaysian_Games, the past winners for Lightning Chess (10-minute blitz) event :

2006 - Imperial College London
2005 - University College London
2004 - University of Southhampton

It is quite common to have Sporting event or Games like this overseas. While GiLoCatur was studying in the states (USA) in late 80's, GiLoCatur also participated in the Malaysian Games held in Austin, Texas. GiLoCatur and University mates were travelling for about 1,000 miles to the games venue which took about 10 hours of driving. We rented cars. Actually, GiLoCatur's university is located in the northern part of texas bordering with New Mexico state. The name of the town is El Paso which is also bordering with Juarez, Mexico. It is easy to visualize about the town just by mentioning High Chaparral. If not mistaken, chess is not one of the games contested. Anyway, GiLoCatur was not active in chess during then eventhough while back in Malaysia while studying in the preparatory college did participate in few chess tournaments. Shah Alam was popular with chess tournaments during that time. GiLoCatur remembered vaguely that once participated in a tournament held underground Dataran Merdeka. Maybe Hairulov can tell and have clear memory about chess tournaments in Klang Valley during the late 80's and early 90's.

Hopefully, Malaysian chess players who are active playing in chess tournaments abroad can share their stories and pictures to enlighten our chess industry. They are very welcome to send their stories and pictures to be entered in this blog.

London Chess Classic

London Chess Classic anyone?

Dear All Chess Fans,

Chess Tournament in London (Dec 2009)
http://www.londonchessclassic.com/

For those who are currently in UK and for those that have sufficient funds, maybe could join this interesting tournament. All the participants will receive a full access to the auditorium and can watch all the strongest GM playing in the Invitational Event.

England's four leading Grandmasters; Nigel Short, Michael Adams, Luke McShane and David Howell will be pitched against a world class field that includes a former world champion Vladimir Kramnik and 18 year old Magnus
Carlsen ranked world number four and widely seen a future holder of the world crown. One of China's finest players; Ni Hua and the US Champion Hikaru Nakamura, complete the field.

I would join the rapid classic event (since I'm in Leicester) and wishing to meet any chess friends especially Malaysian playing in this event.

Thanks.

Regards,

Zaime Zainuddin

UIA Chess Open

GiLoCatur and family had arrived at UIA or IIUM (International Islamic University of Malaysia) situated in Gombak, Selangor. The tournament venue changed from the previous two tournaments that GiLoCatur and kids participated. This year the venue for U12 and U21 categories is at Level 3 of Engine 1 Hall while the open category is one floor above i.e. at Level 4. We were greeted and guided by the tournament crews.

After settling the registration and paying the tournament fees which amounted to RM 60 for the three of GiOCatur's children, we found and settled in a room. As of the writing of this entry at around 10.15am, the 15 feet x 15 feet class room is fulled with few chess families. Bukit Jelutong families, Encik Azhar MS family from Jenjarom, Ismail and Yahaya Ahmad families from Kedah wearing their green Jaffolea shirts and Mr Teh family from Penang. Our room is a popular one because it is the closest to the tournament hall.

The tournament is expected to be very competitive since many MSSM state and MSS district players will be participating. In U12 category, Azhar MS siblings - Irfan Haqqim, Puteri Rifqah and Puteri Munajjah, Azman Hisham siblings, Yeoh Li Yuan, Azam, Ee Sun Xin and Anis Fariha of Selangor, the Teh siblings from Penang, Yahaya siblings from Kedah, Sivanesan siblings from Negeri Sembilan, Amier Hamzah and Faizal Roslan from KL and Shreyes Subramaniam from Pahang. Several SKBJ chess players like Aminur Nirza, Nur Faqihah Aminuddin and Affan Amrish who represented MSSD Petaling Perdana as well as Jamil brothers, Fahim Al-Faqeh and Faqih Aminuddin.

The tournament will start at 11.00am, a one-hour delay from the schedule, and most probably will play seven rounds. More update on the tournament later.
