MSSS not scrapping any sport from its calendar
UNLIKE their parent body — the Malaysian Sports School Council (MSSM), the Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) has decided to maintain the 24 sports in their programme calendar for this year.
However, four sports - squash, cross country, sailing and archery - will be contested at the inter-district level and seven others - bowling, table tennis, rugby, chess, cricket, softball and handball - will be confined to inter-school events in the districts.
( GiLoCatur : If I understand it correctly, chess as well as six others will be played only in the respective MSSD level. )
Selangor Education Department Sports Unit head Mohamed Latifi Abu Bakar said they had a meeting with all the respective technical chairman in Selangor.
“We explained to them the MSSM’s decision. But on our side, we have decided to organise the 13 sports as well as another four at the inter-district level.
“However, we have encouraged the district education department to initiate programmes for the other sports within their jurisdiction,’’ said Mohamed Latifi.
( GiLoCatur : Believes that encouragement alone is not enough. Need proper program and plan from the above i.e. state level. )
Although some events do not cater for the Under-15 age group, the MSSS is keen to work with the state sports associations to implement development programmes.
( GiLoCatur : Is chess one of them? If so, Chess Association of Selangor (CAS) has to take this opportunity to work with the MSSS for the chess development program in Selangor. )
Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur Schools Sports Council (MSSKL) will only be organising the 13 sports in the MSSM calendar.
And only four sports - athletics, gimrama, artistic gymmastics and swimming, will include the Under-15 category.
Kuala Lumpur Education Department Sports Unit head Nordin Mohd Noor said they would be working closely with the state sports associations to organise events during the off-season.
“It is more for the sports not included in the MSSM programme.
“For instance, we will be talking with the Kuala Lumpur Tenpin Bowling Association as well as other associations to initiate age-group competitions. The MSSKL will give full support to make the events a success,’’ said Nordin.

Actually, GiLoCatur is confusing with the title of the article. It says any sport is not scrapped from the calendar, but seven events including CHESS is confined to inter-schools in the districts.
Why Chess is Dropped from MSSM 2010?
Education Ministry slashes budget for MSSM
By Y.P. SIVAM
THE Education Ministry has dropped a bombshell just eight days into the new year by slashing the annual allocation of RM6mil to RM1.5mil to the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM), thus forcing the council to cut down on the number of sports in the calendar.
Until last year, the Education Ministry had provided RM6mil annually to the MSSM. A total 24 sports, catering for the Under-12, Under-15 and Under-18 were under the programme.
However, with a tight budget this year, the MSSM had to restrict the number of sports to only 13.
They are artistic gymnastics, gymrama, golf, swimming, athletics, badminton, netball, basketball, volleyball, sepak takraw, football, tennis and hockey. On top of that, all the sports, except for artistic gymnastics, gimrama, swimming and athletics, will not have the Under-15 age group.
This brings forth the second blow to the sports fraternity.
Prominent sports like bowling, squash and archery have been axed from the programme. These are the sports that have put Malaysia on the world map through current world squash champion Datuk Nicol David, Malaysia’s first professional bowler Shalin Zulkifli and archer Cheng Chu Sian won the recurve individual gold at the recent Laos Games.
Archery is also included in the ambitious Road to London programme targeted for the 2012 Olympics.
The others given the chop are table tennis, rugby, cricket, sailing, softball, handball, cross country and chess.
According to an official, many were caught by surprise when informed of the decision to drop the 11 sports.
“The MSSM officials explained that the Education Ministry had reduced the annual budget.
“With the drastic cut in finance, it is not possible to organise all 24 sports,’’ said the official.
However, all state education department sports units were advised to organise the sports that are not in the MSSM calendar at the school, district and state level.
“But this suggestion is not practical as the state will have to source for sponsorship,” the offical said.
Another problem is that the Education Ministry sports awards for 2010 will only be confined to athletes involved in the sports in the MSSM.
“Then there is also the 10 merit points allocated to students to gain entry in universities. The students, active in the 11 sports not in the MSSM, will lose the 10 merit points and this jeopardises their chances.
More importantly, the MSSM’s decision has demoralised a lot of teachers who have been involved in sports,’’ said the official.
( GiLoCatur : Only the teachers? Come on ... how about the athletes and players? how about the parents? )
Despite the financial constraints, the MSSM have accepted the responsibility to host the Asean Schools Sports Carnival in July.
( GiLoCatur : Why so \more important for the ASEAN level? For glory? Just for a show-off to other countries? Why to neglect and upset our local young boys and girls? If can't afford for the grass-roots and national levels, shouldn't go for ASEAN. Should be very simple. Go to basic. )
The carnival, involving all 13 sports in the MSSM calendar, will be held in the Klang Valley. It is learnt that Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have been entrusted to host the events.

School sports is slowly but surely suffering a natural death. What are we taking about taking Malaysian sports to the next level and spending millions of ringgit, when the very grassroots sports level is neglected! - Tony Mariadass
